Re-calibrating the Pain Network

Migraines are driven by cortical spreading depression and hyper-excitable pain pathways. TMS targets these exact mechanisms to stop pain before it escalates.

Section 01

Preventative TMS for Chronic Migraine

Raising the threshold for an attack by stabilizing hyper-reactive cortical networks over time.

For individuals suffering from 15 or more headache days a month (Chronic Migraine), daily oral preventatives often come with intolerable side effects like weight gain, cognitive fog, or fatigue. TMS offers an effective, non-chemical alternative.

Research suggests that migraine brains are "hyper-excitable." TMS works preventatively by delivering repetitive, inhibitory magnetic pulses over a series of sessions. This gently "damps down" the overactive cortex, altering the pain-processing pathways and making the brain less susceptible to the triggers that initiate a migraine.

A course of preventative TMS can significantly reduce the total number of monthly migraine days, allowing patients to rely less on acute rescue medications (abortives).

Benefits of Preventative Protocol:

Frequency Reduction

Decreasing the total number of migraine attacks experienced per month through sustained cortical stabilization.

Intensity Relief

When attacks do occur, patients often report that they are less severe and resolve quicker than before treatment.

Medication Overuse

Helps break the vicious cycle of "rebound headaches" caused by frequent use of triptans or painkillers.

Section 02

TMS for Acute Migraine Rescue

Interrupting cortical spreading depression in real-time to abort an incoming attack.

Migraines often begin with an "aura" — sensory disturbances caused by a wave of abnormal electrical activity sweeping across the surface of the brain, known as Cortical Spreading Depression (CSD).

Single-Pulse TMS (sTMS) devices are FDA-cleared specifically for the acute treatment of migraine with aura. By applying a very brief, strong magnetic pulse to the back of the head (the occipital cortex) at the first sign of a migraine, TMS can disrupt the CSD wave. This effectively "short-circuits" the migraine process before the pain phase can fully develop, acting as an electronic abortive medication.

01

Early Intervention

Treatment is most effective when administered during the sensory aura phase or at the very onset of pain.

02

Targeting the Cortex

Pulses are usually applied to the occipital lobe at the back of the head to intercept spreading depression.

03

Rapid Relief

Many patients experience significant pain freedom within hours, without the "hangover" effect of rescue meds.

Addressing Migraine & Mood Disorders

Treating the intertwined networks of chronic pain, depression, and anxiety.

There is a powerful, bidirectional link between chronic migraine and mood disorders. Living with unpredictable, severe pain frequently leads to clinical depression and anxiety. Furthermore, anxiety itself is a potent trigger for tension and migraine headaches, creating an exhausting cycle.

Dr. Amin's dual expertise in psychiatry and neuromodulation allows for a holistic approach. By targeting specific areas like the Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex (DLPFC), TMS can simultaneously regulate mood circuits while also impacting downstream pain perception networks. This allows us to lift the burden of depression while concurrently raising the migraine threshold.

ConditionHolistic TMS Impact
Chronic Pain CycleReduces the central sensitization that causes the brain to "memorize" and amplify pain signals over time.
Depression (Comorbid)Activates under-functioning mood centers, improving overall resilience to manage chronic conditions.
Anxiety TriggersCalms the hyper-reactive "fight or flight" response that often precipitates stress-induced migraines.
The Treatment Pathway

A Better Answer for Migraine

We build protocols that minimize side effects and maximize your pain-free days.

Escaping the Med Cycle

TMS offers a path out of the frustrating cycle of trying endless prophylactic drugs, dealing with side effects, or suffering from medication overuse headaches.

Targeted Precision

Unlike Botox which targets local muscles, or pills that affect the whole body, TMS acts directly on the central nervous system networks where migraines originate.

Outpatient Convenience

Treatment sessions are conducted comfortably in our office. There is no downtime, no anesthesia, and you can drive yourself to and from appointments.

Migraine TMS FAQs

While TMS is FDA-cleared for the treatment of migraine with aura, insurance coverage varies significantly depending on the provider and your specific policy. In many cases, it may be considered an "out-of-pocket" expense, unlike TMS for depression which is widely covered. Our office will help determine your coverage options during your consultation.
Botox involves multiple needle injections into the head and neck muscles every 12 weeks to block pain signals from the muscles to the brain. TMS is entirely non-invasive (no needles) and uses magnetic pulses to directly modulate the electrical activity of the brain itself. Patients who dislike needles or have not had success with Botox often prefer TMS.
Migraine is a chronic neurological condition without a definitive "cure." However, a course of preventative TMS can drastically reduce the severity and frequency of your attacks for months at a time. Many patients describe the results as life-changing, allowing them to return to work and social activities. Periodic maintenance sessions may be needed.
